Barra Woodview

Getting Here

Reaching Barra is part of the adventure. However you come, we’d suggest treating the journey as the beginning of the holiday rather than an obstacle to it.

By ferry

CalMac sails directly from Oban on the mainland to Castlebay, a crossing of around five hours through some remarkable scenery. There’s also a shorter crossing from Eriskay, reached by island-hopping down through the Uists. Book vehicle space well in advance for summer travel, as sailings fill up quickly.

By air

Loganair flies from Glasgow to Barra in under an hour, landing on the beach at Traigh Mhòr — the only scheduled beach landing in the world. Because the runway is the sand itself, flight times follow the tide tables rather than the clock, so an early departure is part of the charm.

Getting around

A car is the easiest way to explore the island, and there’s off-road parking for two cars at the cottage. A single-track road circles the whole of Barra in about an hour of easy driving, with Vatersay a short hop across the causeway. There’s also a local bus service if you’d rather leave the car behind.
